The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a 30 acre botanical garden located in Midtown Atlanta, GA.
Founded in 1976 the park was created for the purpose of education, conservation, research and enjoyment. In 2010 the facility doubled the size of the garden and modernized grounds and the expansion allowed for a number of new facilities to be added, including a visitor center and 600-foot-long canopy walk. The visitor center is unique in that its green roof not only provides a natural cooling for the building, it also works as sound insulation, assisting in creating a welcoming quite space for visitors. The upgrades to the facility also created an Edible Garden which features an outdoor kitchen designed to assist visitors in reconnecting with healthy eating.
The Botanical Garden itself is made up of a number of smaller themed gardens. Each of the gardens has a landscape of its own and variety of plants that are specific to the garden theme. There have been Japanese gardens, rose gardens, woodland areas, and a Children’s garden, that features sculpture, fountains, and exhibits that are geared toward educating children about flora and agriculture.
One feature that is unique to the property is the Canopy Walk. The walk winds above the garden and allows visitors to tour the forest from 40 feet in the air. Built in 2010 the walkway is designed to give guest an ariel view of the garden beneath it. In addition, visitors should be sure to also check out the Dorothy Chapman Fugua Conservatory for another unique experience. Inside there are exhibits of plants from tropical rainforests and deserts that have been transported to this urban venue. The rain forest room also includes birds, turtles, and other mammals that might not otherwise be seen without traveling to areas outside of the country.Whether seeking a break from the hustle of city life or seeking to learn more about garden and plant life, this urban oasis offers something for everyone.
